The Windmills Lodges
The Windmills in Nottingham Road have just opened 6 new self catering lodges, and they commissioned me to take photos of them to use on their website, brochures and other marketing material. The lodges are stunning. They’re spacious, modern and all fitted with jacuzzi’s and fireplaces. They’re situated in vast open land, so don’t be surprised if you’re sitting in your jacuzzi and a zebra comes to say hello.
I spent the day there, and went to each one individually. In between photographs I was shifting furniture around, climbing on top of walls and baths so I can get great angles of each room. For each photograph I took, I set my camera to take 3 different exposures (called ‘bracketing’) and stuck them all together with photoshop glue.
Aspen Exhibition
Aspen exhibited at the ICC, and they wanted photographs of their stand to show in their marketing material. I met the chap who owns the company who makes these stands, he told me they get designed and manufactured in JHB then they get assembled on site.
Despite what looks like nice bright lights, it was actually very dark in the hall which meant a bit of a challenge for the photographs. Somehow I managed.
Medtronic Exhibition
This morning I was doing my usual emailing brides and clients when I got a phone call from someone who sounded like they were in a busy noisy place, she asked if I could drive immediately down to Durban and take some photographs of their exhibition stand. I said “Yeah, why not?”. I was at the ICC for under 10 minutes. They literally wanted five photographs for their annual report, so I took ten photographs, but I’ll show you five. Here they are.
Dolos Commercial Shoot
On Friday afternoon I got a call from Jethro, an art director for a marketing company in Joburg. The brief was simple: photograph the dolosse in Richards Bay, and we need the images on Monday morning 8am for our advertising campaign. A flood of memories rushed through my mind at that exact moment. I know exactly how it is, having worked in advertising for many years. Everything is now now now and there’s no time to breathe. It’s one of the reasons I waved goodbye to it.
I had a wedding on Saturday, which left me only Sunday to do it. I wondered if there wasn’t a row of dolosse in Durban I could shoot instead, so I got in contact with a chap from Island View Storage who assured me there’s a row of them at the end of South Beach near the sailing club. So after clearing it with the client, I headed off at 6.30 Sunday morning to find and shoot the dolosse. It’s actually the first shoot I’ve done in ages that hasn’t involved people. Here are a few of the results:
On Board a Cargo Ship
I spent the day on a cargo ship down at Durban harbour, it was part of the SAMSA International Conference with delegates from all over the world. They commissioned me to photograph the inspection of a cargo ship from China. It was about to set sail for USA and needed to pass inspection before doing so. I have to take my hat off to the crew, some of them had been at sea for four months and they were still willing and enthusiastic to help with anything they could.
It was a tiring day and quite demanding from a photography point of view. We went up and down stairs, through tiny doors, up and down ladders, over massive pipes, then in bright rooms then dark rooms then passages and I was constantly shooting whilst changing a multitude of settings on both cameras whilst negotiating this maze of obstacles. It definately wasn’t for the faint at heart but I somehow managed to get some great results, have a look:
Datacentrix Commercial Photo Shoot
The IT company Datacentrix commissioned me to take photographs in and around their offices for use on their website, advertising, annual reports and so on. What a great bunch of people, the sales department especially were full of fun and laughs. I think they were a little surprised to see me taking photos while lying on the floor and standing on desks, and I was carrying big lights around their offices too. Thank you Datacentrix for a really enjoyable day! Here’s a few samples:
Rennies Distribution Services
RDS needed some images for their marketing marketing material, so i popped along and took some. Then I used them in my brochure designs. I had to shoot wearing a hard hat, luminous yellow vest and safety boots.
Spoonfeedas Album Cover
Spoonfeedas is a rock band, they released an album called “Out Of Control” and needed images that were going to convey that message. We started off with painting the album title with light, then we hit the streets at night to get some crazy light shots. It didn’t feel like work at all.
Letlapa Pula
Letlapa Pula is a game reserve and organic farm near Tabazimbi in Limpopo. We went up on holiday to visit mum and dad, and while we were there I ended up doing some commercial photography for their website and marketing material. It was a good weekend of game drives, poitjie and relaxation. Wish I could do it all over again.
Hillcrest Toyota
Hillcrest Toyota needed pics of their new signage for their website, so I arrived the next morning at 5am to catch it while the sun was rising. I stayed on until all the staff arrived to grab some shots of them working too.
